Recently, we created a collection of images for Noble Network of Charter Schools. That meant shooting in 18 high schools, shuffling in and out of dozens of classrooms, documenting hundreds of students going about their days at school.

It was a unique opportunity and challenge to photograph young people at such a pivotal point in their lives. Learning to express themselves in classrooms, on stages and even in boxing rings.

I didn’t know what to expect going into that first Noble classroom. Part of me assumed I would be greeted with a collective teenage cold-shoulder and a sneer or two. But far more often I was fortunate (and thrilled!) to capture students as they experienced moments of child-like enthusiasm, thoughtful reflection, and, not least of all, joy.
